Tragically, two skiers lost their lives while another was fortunate enough to be rescued after an avalanche occurred outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. This unfortunate incident took place amidst the recent spring snowstorms.
The Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake has tragically confirmed the loss of life in this incident, with one fortunate individual rescued from the snow and promptly transported to a hospital for urgent medical attention.
The Salt Lake County Sheriff, Rosie Rivera, announced that a rescue team has discovered the bodies of two skiers, aged 23 and 32. Although the individuals’ identities have not been revealed, their families have been informed. Due to adverse weather conditions, recovery efforts had to be postponed until the next day, pending improved weather conditions.
The survivor, who is working closely with authorities, is providing important information about the incident. The group set out into the terrain on Thursday morning, encountering difficult conditions made worse by the recent heavy snowfall.
As per Craig Gordon from the Utah Avalanche Centre, the region was hit with around 2.5 feet of heavy, moist snow, which presents significant dangers even for skilled skiers. This tragic incident contributes to the number of avalanche fatalities this season, although the overall count is still lower than the average of 30 deaths per year in the United States.
