Witness Recounts ‘Heroic’ Effort to Save Woman, 22, Killed in Withington Crash

In a tragic accident in Withington, a 22-year-old woman lost her life after being struck by a car on Mauldeth Road West on Friday, May 31. Two young men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The incident happened around 11:50 am. Despite immediate and extensive efforts by passersby and paramedics, the woman later died at the hospital.

Local resident Emily witnessed the aftermath and praised the ‘heroic’ actions of two individuals who quickly came to the woman’s aid. Emily’s husband, Steve, noted that these individuals, who appeared to be NHS staff, provided exceptional first aid. “They did an epic job trying to save her life,” he said.

Emergency services, including paramedics and an air ambulance, arrived promptly and worked for about 45 minutes to keep the woman alive. Despite their best efforts, she sadly passed away.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed the arrests of two young men, aged 18 and 22, in connection with the incident. One has been released with no further action, while the other remains on bail pending further investigation. GMP is urging anyone with information, such as eyewitness accounts or footage from doorbells, CCTV, or dashcams, to come forward to aid their investigation.

The local community is in shock and mourning. Adam, 22, who grew up in the area, expressed his sorrow over the senseless loss, saying, “Her family must be heartbroken.” Students who frequently cross Mauldeth Road West described it as a dangerous crossing, with Lucy, also 22, mentioning its busy nature.

Withington councillor Chris Wills called the crash “horrific” and extended his condolences to the woman’s family.

Sergeant Andrew Page of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said, “Our thoughts are with this young woman’s family at this tragic time. They are being supported by specially trained officers, and we will continue to do all we can to get answers for them.”
