Wisconsin’s New EV Charging Tax: What Drivers Need to Know

This new law in Wisconsin introduces a 3-cent-per-kilowatt-hour excise tax on electric vehicle EV charging at public stations, aimed at generating funds for road maintenance.

While some drivers, like Eric Wallin, see it as a fair way to compensate for the heavier weight of EVs that contributes to road wear, critics like Chris McCahill highlight that EV owners already pay a $175 annual fee and may end up contributing more than traditional gas-powered vehicle owners.

McCahill warns that the additional fees could deter potential EV buyers, contrasting with neighboring Minnesota’s incentives to encourage EV adoption.

Despite the added cost, Wallin maintains that EVs still offer significant savings compared to gas-powered vehicles.

The true financial impact will depend on individual charging habits and vehicle efficiency.
