Wisconsin Mourns the Loss of Former Senators George Petak and Tim Cullen

MADISON, Wis. WBAY – Governor Tony Evers shared his condolences Tuesday after the deaths of two former Wisconsin state senators.

George Petak 75
George Petak, a former Republican state senator, passed away Tuesday after battling a long illness. His son announced the news on Facebook.

Petak is best known for casting a crucial vote to fund the construction of American Family Field, previously called Miller Park. This decision helped keep the Milwaukee Brewers in the city but also led to him being the first Wisconsin lawmaker to lose his seat in a recall election.

Petak initially voted against the funding twice but changed his mind, worried about the Brewers leaving Milwaukee. He served the 21st Senate District, covering parts of Racine and Milwaukee counties, from 1991 to 1996.

Governor Evers praised Petak in a statement, saying, “Senator Petak was a man of faith, courage, and principle. He had a servant’s heart, always leading with empathy and integrity to help others.”

Tim Cullen 80
Tim Cullen, a former Democratic senator, passed away Monday at the age of 80.

Cullen represented the Janesville area 15th Senate District from 1975 to 1987 and served as Senate Majority Leader from 1982 to 1987. He returned to the Senate in 2010.

Governor Evers described Cullen as a champion for working families and a strong advocate for fair elections. Senator Cullen fought for nonpartisan redistricting and access to voting during his time in office and beyond, Evers said.
