WLUK — Wisconsin Republicans are planning to review how the state government operates as they gear up for the next legislative session in January.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has set up a new committee called the Government Oversight, Accountability, and Transparency Committee, or GOAT for short.
“This is about making government work more efficiently so people in Wisconsin can continue to live here comfortably and still receive the services they need, said Rep. Vos, R-Rochester, during a Dec. 18 interview with WisconsinEye.
The GOAT committee is inspired by a federal initiative under President-elect Donald Trump called the Department of Government Efficiency DOGE.
Vos explained that the committee will focus on improving how government operates and cutting unnecessary red tape.
The committee will be led by State Representative Amanda Nedweski, R-Pleasant Prairie. Earlier this year, she led a study group on the future of the University of Wisconsin system.
“This committee will start by gathering information from all parts of government—state agencies, the legislature, the executive branch, and even the private sector—to identify and organize issues that need attention, Nedweski told FOX 11.
Vos also wants the committee to explore how artificial intelligence AI could be used to improve state government.
Other Republicans, like Nate Gustafson of Fox Crossing, see the committee as a chance to improve efficiency and potentially save money.
This is an opportunity to find areas where we can do better and cut costs, said Gustafson.
Meanwhile, Democratic State Senator-elect Jamie Wall, D-Green Bay, says he supports the idea as long as it delivers real benefits for taxpayers.
