Wisconsin Files Misconduct Complaint Against Ex-Justice Michael Gableman

Wisconsin legal authorities have filed a disciplinary complaint against former state Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman, citing professional misconduct during his investigation into the 2020 presidential election.

Hired by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos in 2021 to examine election procedures, Gableman’s investigation concluded with no evidence of voter fraud, despite its significant cost. Vos later fired him after Gableman called for Vos’s removal and delivered a report with little value.

During a 2022 hearing, a Dane County judge criticized the investigation, noting taxpayers paid for Gableman to learn election law without prior experience.

The complaint accuses Gableman of violating professional conduct rules, including making false statements in court petitions and misleading tribunals regarding subpoenas issued to the mayors of Green Bay and Madison. He also allegedly made false claims about the mayors’ responses.

Gableman’s courtroom behavior is also under scrutiny. In June 2022, he was accused of making disruptive and misogynistic comments, leading to a referral to Wisconsin’s Office of Lawyer Regulation.

Regulators further allege Gableman deviated from the investigation’s stated purpose of suggesting legislative improvements for future elections. Instead, he promoted claims that the 2020 election was stolen and included a legal opinion on decertifying the results, contradicting Vos’s instructions.

The complaint lists 10 alleged violations, including providing false information and overstepping his role as special counsel by offering legal advice.
