What to Expect After a 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake: Understanding Aftershock Timelines

After a major earthquake, like the recent 7.1 magnitude quake in California, aftershocks are common and can last for a long time. While their intensity lessens over time, they can still be noticeable for weeks, months, or even years.

For example, in the past 24 hours after the California quake, hundreds of aftershocks have been recorded, ranging from small ones (around 1.0) to more noticeable ones (around 4.0). In Washington State, most people don’t feel aftershocks unless they’re over 4.0 magnitude.

Typical Aftershock Timeline:

  1. First Few Days to Weeks:
    • The strongest aftershocks usually happen within the first few hours or days after the main quake.
    • Most of the larger aftershocks occur within the first 24-72 hours.
  2. Weeks to Months:
    • Aftershocks gradually decrease in strength and frequency but can still happen occasionally.
  3. Months to Years:
    • Small aftershocks may still occur, though they are usually minor and less frequent.

For an earthquake as large as a 7.1, it’s normal to experience hundreds of aftershocks, especially in the first few weeks. Over time, these become much less common.
