A program called ‘Kids Market at the Store’ in West Virginia is offering free fruits and vegetables to families. Children aged 2 to 17 can participate by receiving $60 worth of tokens to “shop” for produce at over 61 retailers across 35 counties, including The Public Market in Wheeling.
Sarah Morgan, vendor manager at The Public Market, believes the program helps children learn early about accessing and shopping for fresh produce. Families can apply online to join, partnering with local stores like Butch’s Corner in Marshall County, supported by the Benedum Foundation.
The program aims to increase children’s consumption of fruits and vegetables. Health educator Molly Poffenbarger highlights the benefits of kids choosing and paying for their own produce, fostering healthy eating habits from a young age.
While spots for 2024 are filled, families can apply for the 2025 season. Poffenbarger emphasizes the program’s role in addressing food insecurity statewide, making fresh and local produce more accessible to families in need.
