Virginia voters are heading to the polls on Tuesday for a primary election to choose nominees for several congressional seats, along with local races in Arlington County and Alexandria.
5th District: Republican Showdown
In the 5th District, two ultraconservative candidates are battling it out: House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good and state Sen. John McGuire. McGuire has the backing of former President Donald Trump, while Good has faced criticism for being obstructive in Congress.
This primary is significant as it’s the first time Republican nominees will be chosen through a traditional primary, which opens the voting to a broader base.
7th District: A Battleground Without Spanberger
Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) is running for Virginia governor, leaving her congressional seat open. On the Republican side, veterans Derrick Anderson and Cameron Hamilton are the main contenders, both with strong military backgrounds and ties to the Trump administration. The Democratic primary highlights Yevgeny “Eugene” Vindman, a former Trump whistleblower, who has drawn both support and criticism.
10th District: Wide Open Race
Rep. Jennifer Wexton’s decision not to seek re-election due to health reasons has led to a diverse candidate pool. Leading Democrats include Del. Dan Helmer and state Sen.
Suhas Subramanyam, both well-funded and endorsed by key figures. Other Democratic candidates are former house speaker Eileen Filler-Corn and business owner Krystle Kaul. Among Republicans, Mike Clancy, Aliscia Andrews, and Alexander Isaac are the top contenders, focusing on issues from border security to local education policies.
Local Elections in Arlington and Alexandria
In Arlington County, a heated race for an open county board seat focuses on recent zoning changes. Five candidates are competing in a ranked-choice voting system, which means a clear winner may not emerge on election night unless one candidate dominates first-choice votes.
In Alexandria, the mayoral race to replace Justin M. Wilson has three candidates: City Council member Alyia Gaskins, Vice Mayor Amy Jackson, and retired real estate developer Steven Peterson. All City Council seats are also up for grabs, with 11 candidates vying for six spots on the Democratic ticket.
Polling Information
