Virginia Sales Tax Holiday: What You Need to Know for August 2-4

Even though it’s hard to believe, school is almost over. Soon, there will be ways for you to save money while doing the very important back-to-school shopping.

This is what you need to know about the Virginia and Maryland sales tax breaks coming up.

Virginia

VA’s sales tax break lasts for three days, from August 2 to August 4.

You don’t have to pay sales tax on certain things during the sales tax holiday. These include school supplies, clothing, shoes, items for hurricane and emergency preparedness, and Energy StarTM and WaterSenseTM products.

What items are eligible?

1.) School supplies, clothing, and footwear

Items that are good for school that cost $20 or less each

Must be clothes and shoes that cost $100 or less each.

2.) Hurricane and emergency preparedness products

Generators that you can take with you—$1,000 or less each

Chainsaws that run on gas—$350 or less each

Chainsaw parts and pieces that cost $60 or less each

Other things listed as hurricane safety gear—$60 or less each

3.) Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products

Energy StarTM or WaterSenseTM goods bought for personal or non-business use at home and costing $2,500 or less each

Maryland

Maryland’s tax-free week is back from August 11th to 17th.During the week, the state’s 6% sales tax will not be charged on clothes or shoes that cost $100 or less. There’s no limit on how many things you can buy to get this deal. If you buy a bag, the first $40 is also tax-free.
