Virginia Reinstates Funding for Military Survivors’ Education Program After Recent Cuts

RICHMOND, Va. – Military and first responder families can now relax after the Virginia General Assembly reversed recent changes to the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP).

This program provides free in-state college tuition to the children or spouses of veterans and first responders who were injured or killed on duty.

Funding for the program was cut in the state budget back in May. However, after discussions between advocates, the House of Delegates, and the State Senate, a bill undoing these restrictions was signed last week.

Kayla Owens, Co-Founder of Friends of VMSDEP, expressed gratitude to the General Assembly and Governor, noting that the resolution allows for future improvements and a collaborative approach.

Advocates are now calling for further changes to protect the program from future cuts.
