Virginia Inmate Escape: Woman Charged with Felony for Aiding Fugitive

A woman accused of helping a Virginia inmate escape from custody last year was charged with a felony by a Richmond Circuit Court grand jury this month.

Sasha Castillo, from Washington, D.C., is facing a felony charge for aiding the escape of a prisoner.

The charge is connected to the escape of Naseem Isaiah Roulack, a Virginia Department of Corrections inmate who was on the run for over two months, likely due to police errors. Castillo’s relationship with Roulack is unclear.

Roulack escaped from Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital on the morning of August 12, 2023, by walking past sleeping correction officers.

He managed to evade authorities for over an hour because the hospital wasn’t locked down promptly.

Roulack broke into a nearby home of a 70-year-old Richmond man, stealing keys, $111 in cash, a credit card, and a driver’s license. His hospital gown was found on the floor of the home.

Richmond Police were criticized for not notifying residents about the escape. Henrico County sent a reverse 911 alert nearly three hours after Roulack was last seen.

While on the run, Roulack was also a suspect in an armed car theft in Montgomery County, Maryland. The U.S. Marshals Service and Fairfax County Police captured Roulack on October 25.

Roulack was serving a 13-year sentence for aggravated malicious wounding, grand larceny, and hit-and-run. The two officers who admitted to being asleep during his escape resigned on August 23.

A trial date for Castillo has not been set. “The Virginia Department of Corrections continues to pursue the prosecution of all involved in this escape,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson in a news release. “Inmates who escape or attempt to escape state custody and those who aid and abet them must always face justice for their actions.”
