Virginia Democrats Unveil 20-Foot Inflatable IUD “Freeda” in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. — On July 17, Virginia Democrats introduced a 20-foot inflatable IUD named “Freeda” in Richmond as part of the “IUD Express Tour” by Americans for Contraception. This campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of contraceptive rights.

The event follows Governor Glenn Youngkin’s veto of Senate Bill 237 and House Bill 609 on May 17, which sought to protect access to IUDs, condoms, and birth control in Virginia. The veto came after Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas questioned previous rulings on contraception access.

Katie Baker, spokesperson for Americans for Contraception, emphasized the broad support for contraceptive rights, noting that about 90% of Americans have used or support the use of contraception. She stressed that contraception should not be a partisan issue.

Governor Youngkin justified his veto by citing the bills’ lack of robust religious protections. Family Foundation President Victoria Cobb supported this view, arguing that contraceptive access is already available and accusing politicians of using the issue for political gain.

Richmond resident Julie O’Brien, who has used an IUD since she was 19, shared that it has allowed her to focus on her education and career. She urged politicians to consider the needs of their constituents.

The “IUD Express Tour” will continue to other states, including Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Illinois.
