HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — On Sunday, July 28, Virginia Democrats held a canvas launch in Henrico to support Vice President Kamala Harris, Senator Tim Kaine, and Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan.
Alexsis Rodgers, Chair of the Virginia Democratic 4th District Committee, reported an increase in voter registration and campaign activities since President Joe Biden withdrew from the race last week. “We had 7,000 new volunteers sign up in Virginia,” Rodgers said, “and 2,300 were active this weekend.”
After the event, volunteers went door-to-door to promote Harris’s message and gather support. Congresswoman McClellan noted that the recent Republican Convention has energized people. “Seeing what’s at stake has really fired people up,” she said.
The Republican Party is also ramping up its campaign efforts in Virginia, with Senator J.D. Vance visiting the state earlier this week. Political Science Professor Karen Hult explained that Vance’s visit aimed to introduce him to Virginians and focus on the Appalachian region.
Despite voting blue in the last two presidential elections, Virginia remains a battleground state with renewed attention from both parties. “We’re treating it like a swing state and focusing on turning out voters,” McClellan said.
Early voting begins on September 20.
