United Graduate Receives Tribute for Injured Firefighter Father

This week, Laredo firefighter Captain Angel Garcia was seriously injured while battling a warehouse fire. Due to his severe injuries, he was admitted to the intensive care unit at Doctor’s Hospital and, unfortunately, couldn’t attend his daughter’s graduation.

Graduation Day Tribute

United High School Senior Gianna Garcia had been eagerly anticipating her graduation with the class of 2024, hoping to celebrate this special day with her family. With her father unable to be there, members of the Laredo Fire Department stepped in to honor him and support Gianna during this important milestone.

Fire Department’s Gesture

On Friday, May 31, 2024, firefighters from Captain Garcia’s station, led by Laredo Fire Chief Guillermo Heard, arrived at Sames Auto Arena in their emergency vehicles. They brought along a portrait of Captain Garcia and each firefighter presented Gianna with a rose and a congratulatory hug as she exited the arena.

A Heartfelt Message

Although Captain Garcia couldn’t be there in person, his colleagues made sure his presence was felt. They expressed their admiration and support for Gianna, with one UISD employee telling her, “Your father is a hero.”

Captain Garcia’s Recovery

Captain Angel Garcia continues to recover from his injuries at Doctor’s Hospital. The tribute by his colleagues not only honored his bravery but also celebrated Gianna’s achievements, showcasing the strong community spirit within the Laredo Fire Department.
