Union Township Chair Urges County Assistance in Tornado Cleanup Efforts

Michalle Dupree, Chair of Union Township, is reaching out to the county for aid in the aftermath of a destructive EF2 tornado.

Last Saturday’s tornado left a trail of devastation, ripping apart roofs and tearing trees from their roots across the township. Dupree is urging the county to provide additional assistance to support the affected residents.

While local businesses have pitched in with cleanup efforts, Dupree expressed disappointment at the lack of support from state or county authorities. She stressed the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the need for substantial aid.

CBS Pittsburgh’s Mamie Bah reached out to Washington County for comment. Officials stated that the situation did not meet the criteria for FEMA or PEMA assistance, and no emergency declaration had been issued, limiting their response.

Commissioner Nick Sherman explained that the county’s resources were stretched thin within the first 48 hours after the tornado struck. He clarified that the responsibility now lies with the state. Despite the county’s willingness to help, Sherman highlighted logistical challenges, citing limitations in personnel and equipment necessary for comprehensive cleanup efforts.
