Two men have been arrested for their role in the deadly drone attack in Jordan on January 28, which killed three U.S. soldiers from Georgia, the Justice Department announced on Monday.
The suspects, Mahdi Mohammad Sadeghi a dual U.S./Iranian citizen and Mohammad Abedininajafabadi an Iranian man, were accused of sending sensitive U.S. technology to Iran. Officials said this technology was used in the drone that carried out the attack.
FBI experts analyzed the drone and traced its navigation system to an Iranian company connected to Abedininajafabadi. Prosecutors said the company has strong ties to Iran’s government, military, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps IRGC, which the U.S. considers a foreign terrorist organization.
Abedininajafabadi is also charged with helping provide material support to a foreign terrorist group that led to the deaths of the soldiers.
The attack, blamed on Iran-backed militias known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, killed three soldiers: Sgt. William Jerome Rivers of Carrollton, Sgt. Breonna Moffett of Savannah, and Sgt. Kennedy Sanders of Waycross. Over 40 other soldiers were injured.
Abedininajafabadi was arrested in Italy, and the U.S. is asking for him to be brought to Massachusetts to face charges.
