Governor Jeff Landry R-LA is joining a growing list of Republican lawmakers calling for the expedited confirmation of President-elect Donald Trump’s national security team, particularly urging the Senate to confirm Governor Kristi Noem R-SD as the new Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security DHS.
His call for speed follows a terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day that resulted in significant casualties.
Landry emphasized the importance of having Noem in place before Trump’s inauguration on January 20, particularly with New Orleans preparing to host the Super Bowl.
Landry expressed his concern for supporting the victims’ families while stressing the need for a fully staffed DHS to protect the homeland. He urged Senate Democrats to work with Republicans to ensure Noem’s swift confirmation.
Noem was nominated by Trump shortly after his election win, and many Republicans, including Rep.
Dusty Johnson R-SD, have shown strong support for her due to her experience, particularly her focus on border security during her tenure as governor.
Landry also took to Fox News to highlight the urgency of confirming Noem, drawing attention to the ongoing threat of terrorism and the critical need for leadership at DHS.
