A 15-year-old student at Joppatowne High School in Maryland has died after being shot by another student in the school’s bathroom, according to the police.
The incident took place on Friday, September 6, at the high school in Joppa, Maryland. Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler shared details during a news conference.
“The shooting happened in a first-floor men’s bathroom. After the suspect fired, he left the bathroom and the school,” Gahler said. Other students helped the victim into the hallway, where school nurses attended to him immediately.
Police responded quickly, with the first officer arriving within two minutes, and over 100 officers from local agencies arriving soon after.
The victim was airlifted to a trauma center in serious condition, but sadly did not survive. He was later identified as 15-year-old Warren Curtis Grant. The suspect, a 16-year-old student who allegedly fired a single shot, was caught shortly after fleeing the scene.
Sheriff Gahler noted that it was the suspect’s first day at the school, and authorities already have enough evidence to charge him without conducting an interview.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that the incident was isolated, stating, This is not an active shooter situation. Parents were advised to pick up their children from a nearby church.
Later that day, the sheriff confirmed Warren Grant’s death and said charges would be brought against the suspect soon.
Harford County Public Schools also released a statement, expressing their sadness over Warren’s death and offering support to students during this difficult time.
