Tragic Error in Cowlitz County Leads to Parents Buried with Wrong Child s Body

The emotional and psychological trauma experienced by parents who lose a child is unimaginable, and when compounded by such a profound mistake, the pain becomes even more incomprehensible.

The situation in Cowlitz County, Washington, involving Vanessa Barker and Robert Crabill, serves as a tragic example of how an administrative error can devastate families already enduring profound grief.

In 2022, Khalisee Brian Crabill, born to the couple, passed away shortly after birth. In a horrifying twist, due to an error in the Cowlitz County Coroner’s Office, the parents were given the body of another family’s stillborn child, that of Chelsea Hurst.

This mistake was only discovered months later, after Dana Tucker took office as coroner in January 2023 and uncovered the error made by her predecessor. The Crabills had unknowingly buried the wrong child.

Meanwhile, the stillborn child was exhumed and cremated, and the fate of Khalisee’s body remains unknown.

This case highlights the profound emotional damage caused by such a misstep, as the Crabills’ grief was intensified by the confusion and loss of their daughter’s remains. It serves as a reminder of the human cost of bureaucratic failures, particularly in such deeply personal and sacred matters.

The discovery of the error, along with the uncertainty surrounding Khalisee’s remains, compounds an already unbearable grief for the Crabill family, further raising the question of how such a tragic mistake could have occurred in the first place.
