A sudden and devastating tornado hit suburban Detroit, Michigan, tragically taking the life of a toddler and critically injuring his mother. The tornado, which came without warning, uprooted a massive tree that crashed through the roof of their home, landing on the bed where the mother and her 2-year-old child were sleeping.
Despite rescue teams’ efforts for nearly an hour, the child was pronounced dead at the scene. The mother was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Thankfully, a 2-week-old sibling in another room was unharmed but was taken to the hospital for a check-up.
Livonia Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan shared the community’s grief, offering heartfelt condolences to the family. The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF1 tornado with winds reaching 95 mph had swept through Livonia, carving a 5-mile path of destruction. The storm was so sudden that it didn’t show up on radars in time to issue any warnings.
In Maryland, another tornado struck Montgomery County, northwest of Washington, D.C., causing significant damage and injuring five people. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of collapsed structures and people trapped inside.
The most severe damage occurred in Gaithersburg, where a large tree fell on a house, seriously injuring one person among the five hurt. All injured individuals were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The storm also caused widespread power outages, leading emergency workers to go door-to-door to check on residents and assess the damage. Local news showed images of large downed trees that had crushed houses and blocked roads.
Tornado warnings were issued for parts of Ohio, New Jersey, and Delaware as well, underscoring the extensive reach and impact of these severe weather conditions.
