This Abandoned Town in California Will Give You the Creeps

Just in time for Halloween, a study has uncovered the most haunted locations across the United States. According to findings by Porch.com, Port Costa, California, has clinched the title of the most haunted spot in the nation, despite its small population of only 242 residents.

With a whopping 53 reported ghost encounters, Port Costa boasts an exceptionally high ratio of paranormal activity per capita, hinting that one in four residents may have had a ghostly encounter.

Port Costa’s eerie hauntings include tales linked to the historic Burlington Hotel, rumored to have served as a brothel in its heyday. Just across the street, the Warehouse bar is frequented by spectral visitors, with patrons recounting chilling experiences of ghostly breezes and sightings of a woman in a blue dress passing through solid doors.

Nearby, a private residence has reportedly witnessed all its windows slamming shut simultaneously, sending shivers down the spines of witnesses.

Securing a close second place is Yorktown, Virginia, renowned for its Revolutionary War history and boasting 25 different paranormal locations. Visitors to Yorktown have reported witnessing eerie spectacles, including sightings of long-dead soldiers marching to the beat of phantom drums, as well as the haunting echoes of an 1800s carriage accident.

Gail, Texas, takes the third spot in the rankings, with reports of flickering lights in the abandoned high school and ghostly voices issuing ominous warnings.

Jacksonboro, South Carolina, claims fourth place with its infamous ghostly light, believed to be the lantern carried by a father searching for his missing daughter until he met a tragic end.

The list extends to include:

  • Paris, MI
  • Zoar, OH
  • Axson, GA
  • Harpers Ferry, WV
  • Saunemin, IL
  • Helenville, WI

However, when the focus shifts to states, the narrative takes a surprising turn, with Maine emerging as the most haunted state in the country. With 57.8 ghost sightings per 100,000 residents, Maine narrowly beats out North Dakota and Oklahoma for the top spot. In contrast, Florida ranks as the least haunted state, with only 8.1 sightings per 100,000 residents.

The study, which analyzed data from the Ghosts of America website and the Census Bureau, offers fascinating insights into paranormal phenomena. Interestingly, ghosts are most likely to make appearances in bedrooms (15 percent) rather than attics (5 percent), with basements proving to be another favored haunt (9 percent).

In terms of apparitions, the most common form is that of a girl (12 percent), followed by men (10 percent), women (9 percent), and boys (7 percent).

Military bases emerge as hotspots for spooky encounters, with 7 percent of active bases reporting at least one ghostly sighting. Additionally, the majority of ghostly encounters occur in small towns, with 31 percent taking place within houses.

In summary, the study suggests that for those wary of paranormal encounters, living in a big city, avoiding bedrooms, and steering clear of Maine might be advisable.
