The hip-hop community mourned the loss of DJ Mister Cee when news of his passing on April 10 surfaced. Now, his family has disclosed the cause behind the death of the legendary figure.
According to a report from the New York City Medical Examiner, DJ Mister Cee succumbed to complications arising from diabetes, specifically coronary artery and kidney disease. The family also issued a statement expressing their gratitude for the support received and announcing plans for a public funeral service.
“On behalf of the Lebrun, Wilson, and Calixte families, we want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support for our brother, uncle, and nephew Calvin “DJ Mister Cee” Lebrun in the wake of his untimely passing.
It’s a huge loss for our entire family, the borough of Brooklyn, and the entire Hip Hop Community…Details about the public funeral service will be announced shortly. We ask that you please respect the family’s privacy during this extremely difficult time. Thank you,” the family conveyed in a written statement to the media.
Mister Cee, also known as “The Finisher,” emerged onto the hip-hop scene as the DJ for Brooklyn emcee Big Daddy Kane after their meeting in high school during the 1980s. He honed his DJ skills alongside Kane as the emcee crafted his debut album, Long Live the Kane, released in 1988.
Prior to his radio stardom, Mister Cee played a pivotal role in the early career of The Notorious B.I.G., supporting him from the start and contributing to his signing with Bad Boy Records.
Alongside producing records, global performances, and DJing at various events, he became a fixture on popular radio stations including Hot 97, RADIO 103.9, Rock the Bells Radio, and 94.7 The Block until his unexpected passing at the age of 57.
