Teresa Leger Fernández Sworn in for Third Term in Congress, Casts Key Vote Against Republican Rules Package

U.S. Representative Teresa Leger Fernández was sworn in for her third term in the 119th Congress on January 3, representing New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional District. Reflecting on the significance of her service, she emphasized the importance of the role and the commitment to her constituents, noting, “The responsibility of service is as real as the first day I took the oath of office.”

Following her swearing-in, Leger Fernández cast her first vote of the term against the Republican Rules package, citing concerns that it failed to address critical issues such as rising living costs, housing affordability, and the preservation of Social Security and Medicare.

She criticized the package for continuing the division, dysfunction, and disregard for working families” seen in the previous two years, and for promoting divisive, fear-mongering provisions.

Leger Fernández expressed disappointment but not surprise at the contents of the package, which she claimed did nothing to alleviate the financial burdens on American families.

In particular, she condemned provisions that she argued criminalize reproductive health care providers and detract from efforts to address more pressing issues like economic inequality and access to healthcare.

In her statement, she called for a shift in focus toward tangible solutions that support women and working families, urging the rejection of distractions in favor of policies that provide real protections and opportunities.
