Rep. Mark Cochran’s resolution, HJR 0175, calls for Tennessee universities to adopt policies promoting institutional neutrality, free expression, civil discourse, and campus safety.
This comes after protests over the Israel-Gaza conflict, particularly at schools like Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee.
Cochran believes that the proposal would encourage universities to foster an environment that supports a range of opinions, as seen at these universities.
However, advocacy groups like Indivisible Tennessee argue that the resolution could stifle political protests at colleges.
The proposal has passed the subcommittee and is now set to go to the House Education Committee for further consideration.
