South Dakotans are preparing for a significant cold snap as wind chills dip below zero starting Sunday night.
The National Weather Service warns of gusty northwest winds making outdoor conditions dangerous, with wind chills reaching as low as -20°F overnight.
Light snow is also expected east of I-29 through Monday, although snowfall accumulations will remain minimal.
On Monday, Sioux Falls will see a high of only 12°F, with winds gusting up to 35 mph, leading to hazardous travel conditions.
Residents should dress warmly and secure outdoor items to prevent wind damage. Monday night temperatures will drop to around -4°F, with lighter winds from the north.
Relief is expected later in the week, with temperatures gradually rising to the upper 30s by Wednesday and low 40s by Thursday, though early mornings will still be cold with lows in the 20s.
