Sen. Jon Ossoff’s proposal, the Postmaster General Reform Act, aims to enhance congressional oversight of the U.S. Postal Service by requiring Senate confirmation for the postmaster general’s appointment and setting a two-term limit.
This move is in response to significant mail service issues in Georgia, which Ossoff attributes to leadership failures under current Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.
The Palmetto postal facility in Georgia, intended to improve efficiency by consolidating operations, has been cited as a key factor in delivery delays.
Georgia’s mail service performance suffered in early 2024, with on-time delivery rates dropping below 40%, before improving to over 80%. Ossoff emphasizes the importance of reliable mail service for everyday essentials like medication, legal notices, and small business operations.
The legislation has garnered bipartisan interest, with Ossoff expressing hope that it will address longstanding postal service concerns and help restore public trust.
