Sarah McBride Aims to Make History as First Transgender Woman in U.S. Congress

In the final weeks before Election Day, State Senator Sarah McBride is making her case to Delaware voters, aiming to transition from the State Senate to the U.S. House of Representatives.

If successful, she would make history as the first openly transgender woman elected to Congress, following her win of the Democratic nomination for Delaware’s sole congressional seat.

McBride is focused on issues such as economic relief, reproductive rights, and public safety, which she believes resonate with voters across Delaware.

A Wilmington native and former national spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, McBride has long been an advocate for LGBTQ rights and bipartisan leadership.

She highlights her legislative achievements in the State Senate, such as passing paid family leave and expanding Medicaid, as a testament to her ability to bring meaningful change.

Her opponent, Republican John Whalen, will compete against her in the general election on November 5. The winner will replace outgoing Congresswoman Lisa Blunt-Rochester, who is running for the U.S. Senate.

McBride emphasizes the importance of having a representative ready to address key challenges from day one, pledging to prioritize reducing costs for families, improving healthcare, and fighting for reproductive freedom.
