Tragedy struck Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region as Russian strikes resulted in the loss of at least 10 lives, including that of a pregnant woman, and left 25 others wounded, as reported by local officials.
These devastating attacks, occurring on Sunday, targeted both Kharkiv city and its surrounding areas, continuing the onslaught of missile and bomb strikes by Russian forces in recent weeks, particularly in the northeast region of Kharkiv.
The initial strike, which hit a recreation area just outside Kharkiv, claimed five lives and injured 16 individuals. Later in the day, two villages in the Kupiansk district faced similar devastation, resulting in five more fatalities and nine injuries.
Governor Oleh Syniehubov revealed that Russian forces utilized a self-propelled multiple rocket launcher to bombard the villages in the Kupiansk district.
Mayor Ihor Terekhov provided harrowing details of the attacks within the city, confirming that two Russian missiles struck a recreation center where people had gathered, leading to casualties.
Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of utter devastation, with once-vibrant locations reduced to rubble. Among the victims was a man found beneath the debris, while a distraught woman searched for her belongings amidst the wreckage. The anguish and anger of those affected were palpable, highlighting the human toll of the violence.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reiterated his call for Western allies to supply additional air defense systems to protect Kharkiv and other vulnerable cities. He stressed the urgent need for international solidarity to counter Russian aggression and safeguard civilian lives.
