RNC Sues Georgia Counties Over Weekend Absentee Ballot Drop-Offs

The Republican National Committee RNC has filed a federal lawsuit challenging several Democratic-leaning counties in Georgia, including Fulton County, for accepting hand-delivered absentee ballots over the weekend, a decision the RNC claims violates Georgia’s election law and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

The lawsuit targets seven counties, including Fulton, Cobb, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Clayton, Chatham, and Athens-Clarke, all of which were critical in President Biden’s victory in Georgia during the 2020 election.

The dispute began after Fulton County and other areas allowed voters to return absentee ballots in person beyond the close of in-person early voting on Friday.

Judge Kevin Farmer recently ruled in Fulton County’s favor, noting the state provision in question applies to drop boxes, not hand-delivered ballots.

The RNC contends that allowing certain counties to extend ballot acceptance gives an unfair advantage to voters in Democratic-leaning areas.

This Georgia case is part of a broader national battle over mail-in and absentee ballots, with similar disputes arising in states like Pennsylvania, where courts have intervened to address issues like ballot delays and duplicate mailings.
