Rhode Island Works Benefits Increased by 20%: Relief for Struggling Families

Governor Dan McKee and the Rhode Island Department of Human Services have announced a 20% increase in Rhode Island Works benefits, providing much-needed relief to struggling families. This increase, starting this week, follows a budget boost passed in the 2025 state budget.

Governor McKee highlighted the impact of this investment, saying it will help families face daily challenges and encourage local economic growth. Approximately 8,700 Rhode Island Works families will benefit from this increase, offering vital financial support to those most in need.

DHS Director Kimberly Merolla-Brito emphasized that this increase will promote independence and stability for beneficiaries. She noted that every dollar allocated will strengthen the state’s commitment to its residents and communities.

The increased benefits are funded by federal dollars, a win for state lawmakers who have advocated for reforms. Senator Melissa A. Murray praised the move, saying it will help families escape poverty, while Rep. Arthur Handy stressed the importance of giving every child a fair shot at success.

Additionally, families enrolled in Rhode Island Works may receive an extra $112.50 due to changes in how their income is calculated, allowing them to keep more of their earnings.

Families are encouraged to check their Benefit Decision Notice for details on how this change may affect them, especially in relation to other programs like SNAP. Overall, the increase is expected to provide greater financial support during challenging times.
