Rev. Al Sharpton expressed his stance against pressuring New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to remove Mayor Eric Adams from office amid his five-count criminal indictment.
Speaking at a National Action Network rally, Sharpton emphasized that the decision on Adams’ ability to lead New York City should be left to the mayor himself.
Adams, facing charges of wire fraud, foreign contribution solicitation, and bribery, has denied any wrongdoing and stated he will not resign.
Sharpton questioned the precedent of removing an indicted official, arguing that an indictment does not equate to a conviction.
He highlighted that it should be Adams’ responsibility to determine whether he can balance his legal defense with running the city.
Sharpton also dismissed the notion that Adams was targeted politically, drawing a comparison to the indictment of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.
Looking ahead, Sharpton announced plans for a leadership meeting to privately discuss the situation and aim for a unified stance on the unfolding events.
