U.S. Rep. Dr. Greg Murphy R-N.C., a practicing physician and member of several key congressional committees, has expressed support for the newly established Department of Government Efficiency, co-led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.
Murphy, appearing on Maria Bartiromo’s Wall Street on Fox Business, emphasized the department’s potential to improve the care for U.S. veterans by streamlining bureaucracy at the Department of Veterans Affairs VA.
Murphy advocates for directing VA funding toward high-quality care, rather than administrative waste, and highlights the excessive spending on VA services, noting that the U.S. spends five times more per patient than the British health care system.
Murphy also praised the department’s goal of reducing government inefficiency, a mission he believes aligns with the growing need for reform in various federal agencies. Additionally, Murphy, who represents North Carolina—a state with several major military installations—referred to the importance of maximizing resources for veterans.
The department, which was established ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s January inauguration, is expected to dissolve in 2026, marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Murphy is enthusiastic about the involvement of disruptors like Musk and Ramaswamy, as well as other key Trump administration figures like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Dr. Mehmet Oz. He believes that their unconventional perspectives could lead to meaningful reforms in health and welfare policy, including at the VA.
