Since becoming president of the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association (PAA) in January, Tom Saylor has been committed to supporting its members. His journey in auctioneering began in childhood, practicing with his father’s farm equipment.
However, it wasn’t until 2005 that he pursued this passion professionally, attending auction school at Harrisburg Area Community College, obtaining his license in 2006, and starting his own business, Thomas M. Saylor Auctioneer, in Felton.
The Booming Auction Industry
Saylor sees the auction industry as thriving. He believes auctions are the best way to sell items due to the competitive bidding process, which ensures sellers get the most value.
Live auctions remain popular for their vibrant atmosphere and social interaction, while online auctions are convenient for those with busy schedules. Saylor does not anticipate any decline in the industry unless there are significant economic changes.
Reaching the Younger Generation
To engage younger audiences, Saylor actively promotes auctions on Facebook, hoping to spark their interest in attending live events. He thinks younger people might feel nostalgic for items their parents used, seeking to reclaim them through auctions.
Championing PAA Members
In his roles as president and treasurer of the PAA, Saylor is dedicated to addressing any issues that arise for its members. He praises the PAA’s website as an excellent resource, providing valuable information on auctioneers, relevant laws, bylaws, and ethics, making it a go-to guide for both members and the public.
The Future of Auctioneering
Saylor remains optimistic about the future of auctioneering. He notes that while many young auctioneers follow in their parents’ footsteps, others are drawn to the profession through online auctions. Saylor is committed to staying in the industry and supporting the PAA for many more years, ensuring a bright future for auctioneering.
