One team from Pinkerton Academy will move on to global finals competition in Destination Imagination (DI) in Knoxville, Tenn., May 25-28.
The technical team titled “How Many Dragons Have You Fought” finished second in the Pace of Change challenge at the state competition Saturday at Nashua North High School.
Pinkerton had two teams qualify at regionals last month to compete at the state tournament, but only one team qualified for Globals with its performance at States.
Team members of the qualifying team are seniors Andrew Cunningham, Kyle Moran, Cassandra Wright, and Mitchell Williams, all of Derry, and senior Morgan Freeley and juniors Wyatt Hoppa and Maria Soraghan, all of Hampstead. The qualifying team is coached by Chris Pond of Hampstead.
“’How Many Dragons Have You Fought’ put in a tremendous amount of effort to completely re-do their solution between the Regional and State tournaments,” said Pinkerton DI coordinator Martha Pond. “The scientific team did not place and thus will not be advancing, but these juniors consider it a learning experience for next year.”
“We have had over 3,000 amazing students from Kindergarten through college in our New Hampshire DI program this year,” said New Hampshire Destination Imagination Affiliate Director Anna Maenhout. “And we are very thankful for our more than 1,000 volunteers who have helped make our program possible.”
“These teams are now in fundraising mode”, according to Wayne Kurtzman, NH-DI’s volunteer media relations director. “It’s worth it when you get to meet teams from all over the world who just went through the creative process you did.”
Martha Pond said Pinkerton DI has planned a fund-raising yard sale for Saturday, April 16 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the Pinkerton Field House. Donations are welcome, and pick-up can be arranged by contacting any team member or Martha Pond at ([email protected]).
She said the team would be continuing to refine its solution in preparation for the Global tournament.
It was earlier noted that a DI team from Derry Village Elementary School had advanced to the state finals, but as there were only two teams in that category and the Derry Village team came in second, DI officials confirmed that the second-place team did not advance.
