The Derry Town Council has approved removing parking restrictions on the east side of Highland Avenue, following a developer’s intent to turn the former Floyd School into an apartment building. The Council voted 7-0 to remove the parking limitations, after a public hearing at the June 4 Council meeting brought no public comments.
Town Administrator John Anderson said the Planning Board had recently approved the plan to redevelop the school. The approved site plan includes 47 parking spaces on site. The restriction was originally put in place to control parking during the peak hours at Floyd School, 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 3 p.m. when school was in session.
The Highway Safety Committee recommended that the Council amend the traffic ordinance.
The motion was to remove the limited parking from Highland Avenue East, from 100 feet north of Severance Street and 300 feet south of Severance Street.
“This amendment brings the ordinance in line with the current conditions,” Anderson explained. “The limited parking was established when there was a school, and there is no longer a school.”
