A North Carolina lawmaker has gone viral on TikTok after his office allegedly told a female constituent to move to China in response to her email about the state’s abortion policy.
The woman, who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons, told NBC News she emailed Republican state Sen. Danny Britt on Nov. 7, expressing frustration.
In her email, she said her family wanted to have more children but couldn’t because of strict abortion laws, adding, Thanks for ruining our futures! You all are terrible people.
In reply, Britt’s legislative assistant, Camille McDougald, reportedly suggested the woman relocate. I suggest you move to China immediately and see how that works out for you, the email read.
If for some reason that fails, Russia is nice in the winter and Venezuela in the summer.
The response gained attention after TikTok user Lindsay Talley shared a video about it. The video, which explains the woman’s genetic condition that leads to life-threatening fetal heart issues, has over 260,000 views. Many commenters called the response unprofessional and disgusting.
The woman revealed she has a rare genetic condition with a 50% chance of being passed on to her child.
