VIRGINIA – The White House has announced $325 million in funding through the Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant to seven communities across the U.S. This funding aims to build more homes and revitalize neglected neighborhoods. One recipient is the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority (NRHA), which will receive $2.5 million to reduce housing costs in Virginia.
The grants will be used to redevelop low-income housing with a focus on services related to income, health, and education. They can also be applied to neighborhood improvements that promote economic development and attract private investment.
HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman stated, “This funding is not just an investment in buildings and infrastructure – it’s an investment in people,” highlighting the administration’s commitment to creating thriving communities through enhanced housing options.
The Choice Neighborhoods program is essential for preserving and expanding affordable housing nationwide. It has successfully introduced new businesses, parks, and grocery stores to low-income neighborhoods and increased resident income in most areas.
The seven awardees, including NRHA, will collectively invest over $2.65 billion in additional resources in their respective areas.
Richard J. Monocchio, HUD’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public and Indian Housing, emphasized the importance of these awards, noting that they are directed to neighborhoods in greatest need and will help expand housing supply and provide essential resources to residents.
Established in 1940, NRHA is Virginia’s largest redevelopment and housing authority and is recognized as a national leader in real estate development and property management.
