New Year s Day Attack in New Orleans: 35 Injured in French Quarter Tragedy

Authorities identified the suspect in the early morning New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans’ French Quarter as 42-year-old Army veteran Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar of Texas, who served in Afghanistan. Jabbar allegedly drove a rented Ford pickup truck into a crowd at around 3:15 a.m., injuring approximately 35 people.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the incident, describing it as a “cowardly act of evil against innocent New Year’s revelers” and highlighting the persistent threat terrorism poses to the nation.

While no direct ties to New York have been reported, Hochul directed the New York State Police to remain on high alert and emphasized collaboration with federal agencies like the FBI to monitor emerging threats.

The Sugar Bowl College Football Playoff game between Notre Dame and Georgia, originally scheduled for Wednesday night at Caesars Superdome, has been postponed to 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, due to the incident.

Governor Hochul assured New Yorkers that their safety remains a priority and expressed solidarity with the people of New Orleans.

This is a developing story; updates will follow as more details emerge.
