New VA Medical Facility in Sussex County to Transform Veteran Healthcare

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced plans to create a new medical facility in Sussex County, Delaware. Local leaders from both political parties are celebrating this step, which will make health care more accessible for veterans in the area.

The proposed facility will be much larger than the current one, with about 136,000 square feet of usable space and plenty of parking. Right now, Sussex County’s VA clinic only has 11,155 square feet available for veterans’ services.

This new facility will allow veterans in southern Delaware to get care closer to home, reducing the need to travel to the Wilmington VA Medical Center in Elsmere.

What Leaders Are Saying

  • Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester emphasized the importance of giving veterans quality care and noted that under President Biden, VA benefits have expanded to help more veterans than ever.
  • Sen. Tom Carper, a Navy veteran, said bringing services closer to veterans honors their service and helps them access the benefits they’ve earned.
  • Sen. Chris Coons praised the Biden administration’s investment in veterans’ health care and said this new facility will continue to deliver the support veterans deserve.

The Delaware State Senate Republican Caucus also thanked the delegation for their efforts, calling the project a big step toward better healthcare access for veterans in Sussex County.

Why This Matters
Veterans in southern Delaware, especially older or disabled ones, often struggle to travel long distances for care. This facility will make it easier for them to access primary care, mental health support, and other specialized services. It’s part of a broader VA initiative, with similar projects planned across the country, including in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and several other states.

Rep. Blunt Rochester and other leaders have pushed hard to get this project approved, and the VA has now secured over $630 million for medical facility leases and construction in multiple locations.

This new Sussex County facility will improve efficiency and provide veterans with the respect and care they’ve earned through their service.
