Nearly 200 Kentucky Co-op Workers Aid Power Restoration in Carolinas and Georgia

Kentucky Electric Cooperatives KEC has deployed the largest number of mutual aid crews in its history to assist with power restoration efforts following Hurricane Helene. Nearly 200 employees from Kentucky co-ops are currently working in the Carolinas and Georgia, with additional contract crews joining the effort.

KEC spokesperson Joe Arnold highlighted the extensive damage in the affected areas, where restoring power goes beyond simple repairs. In some regions, entire infrastructure components, like utility poles, have been destroyed or washed away. Arnold noted that co-ops carefully assess their local needs before deciding to send aid to ensure that enough crews remain in Kentucky, especially after 100,000 local customers lost power due to Helene.

While there are no current plans to send crews to Florida to assist with the recovery from Hurricane Milton, Kentucky co-ops remain on standby in case a request is made.
