Mike Carey: The Republican Rising Star Eyeing Ohio’s U.S. Senate Seat

Rep. Mike Carey, R-Ohio, is positioning himself as a strong contender to replace Vice President-elect JD Vance in the U.S. Senate. Carey, a former coal lobbyist, combat veteran, and incumbent representing Ohio’s 15th congressional district, highlighted his extensive experience working with President-elect Trump and his readiness to support the new administration’s agenda in the Senate.

He emphasized that the next senator from Ohio needs to be prepared to hit the ground running on “day one” and avoid a learning curve.

Carey, who has been endorsed three times by Trump, stressed that his focus would be on ensuring the success of the president’s policy initiatives, especially given Ohio’s unique political and demographic landscape.

He also pointed to his bipartisan efforts, such as helping pass the Congressional Election Observer program and his work on issues like tax credits for caregivers and in-vitro fertilization.

Additionally, Carey reflected on his strong record in Ohio’s 15th district, which spans a mix of urban, suburban, and rural areas, boasting a significant minority population.

Ohio’s Republican Governor Mike DeWine will ultimately choose Vance’s replacement, with a special election set for 2026 to fill the remainder of Vance’s Senate term.

Among other potential GOP candidates are Reps. Jim Jordan, David Joyce, and Warren Davidson, along with former Ohio Republican Chair Jane Timken, Secretary of State Frank LaRose, and state Sen. Matt Dolan.

Carey’s familiarity with Ohio and his track record in both the public and private sectors put him at the forefront of the conversation as he seeks to continue serving the state in the Senate.
