As Pennsylvanians gear up for the upcoming election, one of the key races on the ballot is for the position of Auditor General, the state’s chief fiscal watchdog responsible for ensuring proper spending of public funds through audits.
Republicans:
Timothy DeFoor
Incumbent Auditor General Timothy DeFoor is seeking reelection for another term. With a background as a Special Investigator with the Commonwealth and as Dauphin County Controller, DeFoor has been serving as Auditor General since 2020. He emphasizes his commitment to fighting waste, fraud, and abuse to protect Pennsylvania’s families, seniors, and businesses. DeFoor holds degrees from Penn State University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology.
Democrats:
Malcolm Kenyatta
State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta emerged victorious in the Democratic primary, securing over 636,000 votes. Kenyatta, known for being the first openly LGBTQ+ person of color elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly, is focused on advocating for working families.
He pledges to rebuild the Bureau of School Audits, establish the Bureau of Labor and Worker Protections, and prioritize community health and safety initiatives. Kenyatta serves on several House committees and holds degrees from Temple University and Drexel University.
Not Running:
Mark Pinsley
Lehigh County Controller Mark Pinsley, though unsuccessful in the Democratic primary, brought attention to his auditing experience and commitment to governmental oversight.
With a background in the Army Reserves and corporate sector, Pinsley highlights his efforts to investigate government operations and save taxpayer money during his tenure as Lehigh County Controller.
Mark Rozzi
Former Pennsylvania Speaker of the House Mark Rozzi withdrew from the Auditor General race in January 2024.
The general election is scheduled for November 5, 2024, providing Pennsylvanians with the opportunity to choose their next Auditor General.
