Mayor Michelle Wu expressed gratitude for living in Massachusetts, where leaders and the community are committed to protecting women’s rights. She shared her pregnancy journey during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where she discussed the importance of reproductive rights with New Hampshire’s delegation.
Wu, currently expecting her third child, emphasized the ongoing fight for these rights. She revealed that her family used assisted reproductive technology for this pregnancy and spoke openly about the miscarriages she experienced between her second child and the current pregnancy.
Her comments come as reproductive rights and in-vitro fertilization become major topics in the presidential race. Vice presidential nominee Tim Walz has also shared his family’s experience with fertility treatments that led to the birth of his daughter, Hope.
Reflecting on the challenges, Wu mentioned the emotional toll of fertility treatments and criticized those seeking to restrict access to them. She recounted a missed miscarriage, where an early ultrasound showed no signs of life. Wu then explained the medical care she received, including taking mifepristone and misoprostol—medications that are banned in several states due to their use in some abortions.
Wu reiterated her appreciation for living in a state like Massachusetts, where women’s rights are strongly defended, but also expressed anger that these issues are still up for debate.
