Mack Plaque Remains at Pinkerton for 14th Straight Year

Thanks to a pair of lopsided cross-country victories in Derry Tuesday, Oct. 6, Pinkerton Academy’s fall varsity sports teams put the final touches on their success in the 2015 Mack Plaque games with the rival Londonderry High Lancers.

The academy won the Mack Plaque for the 14th consecutive year by posting a 6-2 overall record in the series of contests with LHS, although the Lancers still had a chance to take the plaque by sweeping the boys’ and girls’ cross-country races at PA last week (see related story page 12).

Pinkerton entered the primary part of this year’s Mack games with a 1-0 lead after the Astro golf squad defeated the Lancer golfers  on Sept. 15.

The academy’s Mack Plaque lead then grew to 2-0 on Friday night, Sept. 25, when the host Astros’ football squad defeated the Lancers by a 35-20 count.

The PA lead bulged to 3-0 the following morning when the Lady Astros’ volleyball team defeated the Lady Lancers by a 3-0 tally.

And then the two schools’ undefeated girls’ soccer teams faced off with Pinkerton snagging a 4-0 Mack Plaque lead when the PA girls claimed a 1-0 win in that match.

Londonderry collected overtime victories in both field hockey and boys’ soccer later in the day to place the overall Mack Plaque tally at 4-2 in Pinkerton’s favor.

The Lancers still grasped hope of tying the 2015 Mack games by sweeping cross-country, and that would have left the spirit championships in November and the PA and LHS teams’ performances at that event as the Mack tie-breaker. But the academy harriers made it academic.
