Louisiana Republican Governor Jeff Landry has urged Senate Democrats, particularly those on the Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee, to swiftly confirm Kristi Noem as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Homeland Security following a terrorist attack in New Orleans.
Landry emphasized the need for immediate leadership in the wake of the attack on Bourbon Street, which resulted in at least 14 deaths and numerous injuries.
He called for Noem to be confirmed without delay to ensure a smooth transition in leadership, particularly as the nation prepares for upcoming large-scale events like the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras.
In addition, Landry is pressing President Biden to approve a Presidential Disaster Declaration for New Orleans to assist in the recovery efforts.
This comes after the terrorist attack disrupted essential services and overwhelmed local resources. Law enforcement and emergency management groups have also voiced strong support for Noem’s confirmation, recognizing the importance of a stable and capable leadership at the Department of Homeland Security to address national security concerns.
