As if the Derry Little League’s two Jimmy Fund baseball squads haven’t had enough reasons to remember the summer of 2014, the hits just keep right on coming.
The local youngsters, who have collected more than $6,000 for the “Little Leaguers Take a Swing at Cancer” program and the Dana-Farber Cancer Center this summer, will add to their memories Sunday, Aug. 17, by playing a low-key contest on George’s Island in Boston Harbor after the completion of a regularly-scheduled Old Time Baseball contest.
“The two teams will be taking the ferry over to George’s Island in Boston Harbor, and after the Old Time game we’ve been given permission to have a little scrimmage. It should be a lot of fun,” said team parent Sue McGill.
The young hardball players – who are aged 9 and 10 – recently made an emotional trip to Boston to visit the Dana-Farber center and Fenway Park as well, and the chance to go out to the island will cap off their summer activities.
The youngsters had their fundraising efforts pushed along by the inspiration gained from the valiant cancer fight of West Running Brook Middle School student Alanna Marcotte, whose battle with the disease ended when she passed away on April 22.
