The Pinkerton Academy field hockey squad went undefeated in its final three matches of the 2015 regular season recently – including consecutive wins over Concord and Exeter last week – and earned a first-round bye in the Division I tournament.
Coach Jen Resmini’s Astros tallied a 1-0 edging of Concord in the state capital last Tuesday, Oct. 13, and followed up with a 3-0 blanking of the Exeter High Lady Blue Hawks in Derry two days later to close out the regular campaign with a 10-2-2 record.
That mark earned the academy ladies a first-round bye in the D-I tourney, giving them the chance to sit back, relax, and see what occurred in the first round of tournament play Thursday, Oct. 22. Resmini’s roster will host a quarterfinal-round tournament match on its home pitch on Sunday, Oct. 25.
Pinkerton edged the Concord High Crimson Tide by the 1-0 tally, thanks to prolific goal-scorer Samantha Day’s clutch goal – which was set up by Kristin Crowell – late in the second half of the hard-fought battle. PA goalie Abbey Doherty kept Concord (7-5-1 record) off the score-sheet by turning aside three scoring attempts.
“The forward line, led by Sam Day, Gabby Guerard, Abby Amato, and Madison Lolicata, stepped up its game to produce great scoring opportunities,” said Resmini. “Emma Bennett had a strong game at midfield, and Courtney DesRoches and Kristin Crowell gave quality minutes.”
The Lady Astros also put forth plenty of quality work in the 3-0 whitewashing of 5-8-1 Exeter in Derry on Thursday, Oct. 15, with Sam Day potting all three goals in leading the way for the locals.
Day tallied twice in the first half and bagged her hat-trick in half number two, with Guerard, Carly Young, and Meaghan Michaud registering assists. Keeper Doherty contributed two stops to her side’s ninth shutout of the fall and third in a row.
“Mackenzie Pierce, Alyssa Greig, and Meaghan Michaud played well in our final regular season game,” said the coach.
