The Pinkerton Academy girls’ lacrosse squad is building up a head of steam as it surges forth in its drive toward a third consecutive Division I championship.
The Lady Astros plowed past the Hollis/Brookline Lady Cavaliers and the Manchester Central Little Green last week – bagging their 10th and 11th consecutive victories in the process – in advancing their 2015 record to a stellar 14-2.
The two-time defending D-I champs throttled the host Hollis/Brookline bunch by a 20-5 tally on the road Tuesday, May 19, with senior star Maggie McCarthy making some big news by becoming the leading goal-scorer in Pinkerton girls’ lacrosse history.
McCarthy potted four goals in the lopsided victory, and the first of those was number 230 of her career. That tally broke the career scoring record of 229 belonging to Maura Murphy – the daughter of former PA girls’ lax coach Bryon Murphy and presently the girls’ lacrosse coach at Windham High School – set 10 years ago.
“I called a time-out at the time of the goal, and both I and Bryon Murphy, who made a special trip to the game in Hollis in anticipation of Maggie scoring, presented the ball to Maggie,” said coach Rob Daziel.
All in all, the Lady Astros had 10 players net goals in the trouncing of Hollis/Brookline, during which the locals raced out to a 14-2 lead by halftime and then outscored their hosts by a 6-3 tally in the second half.
“We started the game with 10 unanswered goals in the first 15 minutes of the game,” said a proud Daziel.
Along with McCarthy’s notable heroics, the victors got two goals and two assists from Amanda Szostak, one goal and three helpers from Micaela Capozzo, three goals apiece from Megan Jarvis and Ariel Vaillancourt, two goals and a helper from Colby Millsaps, two tallies from Nola Wesche, a goal and an assist from Dani Tompkins, and single goals from Britney Johnson and Morgan Donahue.
Pinkerton’s defensive efforts were led by Kristen Sobolewski, Emily Sharretts, Melanie George, Morgan Hazelton, and Carly Young. Britney Johnson led the winning team in caused-turnovers from her midfield position.
The PA girls followed up that fine work with an 18-1 trouncing of Central in Derry Friday, May 22.
The Lady Astros wind up their regular season this week with matches on Tuesday, May 26, against the Dover Green Wave, after Nutfield News press time, and on Friday against rival Londonderry.
