Lady Astro Booters Bounce Three More Opponents, Reach 6-1

Shutout victories over Alvirne and Salem and a one-goal edging of Manchester Central last week enabled coach Steve Gundrum’s Pinkerton Academy girls’ soccer team to bounce its 2014 record up to an impressive 6-1.

The Lady Astros started off a busy week with a 5-0 throttling of the visiting Alvirne High Lady Broncos of Hudson in Derry on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

The hosts moved to 4-1 on the campaign by potting two goals in the first half and then adding three more in the second against a 2-3-1 Alvirne crew.

Mel Roberge netted two goals for the hosts, Courtney Velho registered a goal and an assist, and single tallies also came from Erica Parent and Julia Bousquet. An assist was also contributed by Nicole Gonya.

Pinkerton thumped some 18 shots on the Lady Broncos’ cage, and goalie Sammy Mitchell made five saves her contribution to the lopsided PA win.

Victory was considerably tougher for Gundrum’s academy crew at home against Manchester Central two days later. But the Pinkerton bunch did manage to walk away with a 2-1 victory that day. Both talented teams ended up with 5-1 records at the end of the battle.

The first half was scoreless, but Aeriela Thornton staked the hosts to a 1-0 lead 58:45 into the match when she was set up by McKenzie Anderson.

Central knotted the score at 1-1 a little less than 10 minutes later, but the prolific Mel Roberge gave her side the eventual game-winning marker with 4:45 left in regulation time on a set-up by Velho.

Pinkerton goalie Mitchell made a dozen stops in the slim win, with her teammates smacking nine shots on the Manchester side’s goal.

And in the 1-0 nipping of 2-6 Salem in homecoming day play in Derry last Saturday, Sept. 20, Gundrum’s group made Keara Doolan’s score at the 43:44 mark of the match stand up.

The Doolan tally was set up by Julia Bousquet, and PA keeper Mitchell turned aside three Salem shots in contributing to the victory. The Lady Astros pelted the Lady Devils’ net with some 16 shots.
